The Expedition: Advocate the Way of the Woods

The Northern Forest Center advances its mission through a variety of network-based programs to enhance forest stewardship throughout New England. This goal of this website redesign was to tell and, more importantly, show all that the Center has done over the last decade for forest conservation. This included placement of prominent CTA’s throughout the site so that visitors understanding the impact of their efforts could support them. In short, the site focuses on what the Center cares most about; "thriving communities, healthy forests and innovative and resilient local economies."

The overhaul of the Northern Forest site required the addition of an interactive map that provided work progress updates to site visitors. This map – built on Google Maps – now showcases the breadth of Center’s work, including modern wood heat initiative programs and partnerships, companies helping to promote wood products innovation, educational partners and more. Formerly, this information was sent in one annual report with an attached JPG. But the center is often engaged in over 100 or more projects at one time, so this was a way to aggregate all of that information an in easy-to-view map.

"Why should I care?" That’s the question every website should answer as quickly as possible. The Center generates thousands of jobs, protects over 200,000 acres of forestland to benefit the community, and has procured over $95M in investments for their forest-saving projects. This is displayed clearly, above the fold, on the landing page of the new site. We made sure that site visitors would understand that before ever having a chance to leave the site.
